World War II (Sept. 1, 1939 – Sept. 2, 1945) was the deadliest war in history, in many respects a continuation of the disputes left unsettled by WWI. WWII was a global conflict of Axis belligerents led by Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Imperial Japan vs. Allied defenders, led by Great Britain, the US, the USSR, and China. Combatants from most of the world’s nations participated on one side or the other—some participated on both. All wars are horrible human excesses of aggression that bring sorrow and tragedy, but war also highlights humanity’s ability to rise above the pain and forges heroes.
